Located at the confluence of French Creek and the Allegheny River, Franklin was a key strategic spot in the French and Indian War. Later, with the discovery of oil in nearby Titusville, Franklin became a center for oil production with "Franklin Heavy Crude," unique to the area, earning fortunes for its sellers. St John's Episcopal Church in Franklin has its own piece of history in the 30 stained glass windows from the famed studios of artist and decorative designer Louis Comfort Tiffany. Franklin's Applefest, beginning the first Friday in October each year, is the region's largest festival, and its Antique and Classic Car Show draws more than 500 participants. Franklin also has plenty of great specialty shopping and dining, and historic accommodations like the Inn at Franklin, an elegant, full-service Victorian hotel with 100 rooms in the heart of Historic Franklin.
