Agnes Katz Plaza
Katz Plaza in Pittsburgh's Cultural district is named in memory of Agnes R. Katz and is a gift from her children. Agnes Roman graduated from Peabody High School and became the first paid employee of what would become Papercraft Corporation. She married Joseph M. Katz in 1937, and when Papercraft was incorporated in 1945, Joe and Agnes retained 60 percent owenership and also supplied the substantial working capital required for launching and financing the new company. The family-operated corporation employed many women, and prospered. Katz Plaza, a refuge from the street, is filled with remarkable contents including a bronze fountain cascade 25 feet high and three pairs of large granite benches resembling human eyes, all designed by sculptor Louise Bourgeois.
