Susquehannock State Park Attraction Details
Susquehannock State Park
http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/susquehannock.aspx
This park overlooks the Susquehanna River and gives a panoramic view of one of the most scenic river valleys in America. The park offers a hilltop picnic spot, many trails for hiking and horseback riding, and a group tenting area.

The park's primary attractions are the river overlooks which afford a panoramic view of the Susquehanna River. The "Conowingo Reservoir" portion of the river is easily seen. The lake is formed by the Conowingo Dam in northern Maryland. The park's main overlook offers a spectacular view of the Susquehanna River with many islands dotting the waters surface, including Mt. Johnson Island to the left of the overlook.

Mt. Johnson Island was the first piece of land set aside in the world as a Bald Eagle Sanctuary. Watch for eagles and other birds of prey as they soar past the overlooks on any given day. From the overlooks, you can view the Philadelphia Electric Company's Peach Bottom Atomic Energy Plant and the Muddy Run Hydroelectric Generating Plant.

Several picnic areas provide over 100 picnic tables, drinking water and comfort stations. Two softball fields and a play area are located near the picnic area and the park office.

The many trails throughout the park and the adjacent Muddy Run Recreation Area offer a beautiful setting for horseback riding in the river hills. Horseback riding is prohibited at the overlook, scenic view area and River Hills Trail. To accommodate riding clubs and horse drawn wagons, a shaded hitching rail for horses is available in the lower parking lot.

There are five miles of scenic hiking trails in the park offering a wide variety of interesting habitats and evidence of man's past use of the area. A Field guide to the Natural History of Susquehannock State Park is available at the park to assist you in discovering the natural resources of the park.
